5. TEACHING PRACTICE: IT'S TIME TO SHARE

5.1 PROCEDURE OF TEACHING

Figure 18. Demo Teaching Day 1

After the bell rang signaling the change of lesson I prepared to teach. Prepare learning activities by connecting a laptop to a smart TV and writing down the date of the meeting. Then, when everyone was ready, I stood facing the students and vice versa, then said "Good afternoon, Mr. Lan” I said “Good afternoon students”. Then the students will turn back to say hello to their friends from mathematics who accompany me in the teaching demonstration. After that I invited them to sit down and start learning. In order to create two-way communication, I always give warm up to students at the beginning of learning with the aim of recalling students' previous understanding and fostering an attitude of courage and responsibility towards the answers given. At the end of the meeting I will give prizes to students who have dared to try to complete the warm up and they are very happy about it.

After the warm up, I also gave them motivation related to the material to be studied so that it aroused their curiosity to explore the material that would be discussed. After getting to the core of the material, I provide visual images that make it easier for them to understand the material accompanied by a translation into Vietnamese. After discussing the example questions, I will not forget to give them exercises to train them to be more proficient. At the end of the lesson I provide another evaluation in the form of a worksheet activity so that students can apply the material they have learned. I always appreciate students who dare to answer in front of the class and provide feedback on the answers they give.

After the learning activities in class, then I will close by saying "Thank you students, see you again" and they will answer "Thank you Mr. Lan" and I invited them to sit down again, then I prepared to leave the class.

5.2 TIME MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZING ACTIVITIES

Figure 19. Teacher Make an Activities For Students

In time management and organizing learning activities, I have learned a lot here that people really value time by arriving on time before activities start. This is also always conveyed by the DThU SEA-Teacher coordinator, Mr. Truc who always reminds us to arrive on time at school. I arrived 15 minutes before class started so I had enough time to prepare for class. When organizing activities in class, I always remember the duration I planned in the lesson plan so that time management and activity organization can run according to the scenario in the lesson plan. As for things that happen that are not planned, I have to think of ways to ensure that all activities continue to run according to the time available, for example by selecting certain questions on the worksheet for students to work on so that students still have time to complete them on time.

According to the lesson plan that I made, I set aside the first 3 - 5 minutes for introductions and making class agreements, then 10 - 15 minutes for explaining the material and example questions in Canva Presentation and writing on the whiteboard. 10 minutes for working on the worksheet and 5 minutes for discussion and the last 5 minutes I use to give students the opportunity to make conclusions from what they have learned and then I close the class.

5.3 PROBLEM-SOLVING: a way to reach the finish

Figure 20. Student Solve a Problem

The obstacle we faced was language, language differences made it very difficult for us to convey the material very smoothly. However, this can be solved by adding a Vietnamese translation to the Canva presentation so that students can easily understand the material and help from mathematics major friends who have good English skills are also very helpful in processing activities in class so that all scenarios in lesson planning can be resolved. Next, in honing students' problem-solving skills, I always give them warm ups to complete at the beginning of learning which helps students to recall their previous understanding and use creative solutions in solving problems.

5.4 CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

Figure 21. Teacher Make Groups in Class

At the beginning of the meeting, I gave three class agreements to students in the Canva Presentation display on Smart TV, namely:

  1. Sit properly
  2. Listen and participate in the discussion
  3. Raise your hand if you want to ask or answer a question

This agreement can work very well in 4 class meetings because students at Future School are disciplined and have good attitudes so it is not difficult to control the noise in class.

When dividing groups, I also display several rules in Canva Presentation that will enable students to do the worksheet well and at the right time. Some rules when forming a group are:

  • Make 4 groups, each group consists of 4 people.
  • Each group completed the worksheet.
  • Processing about 15 minutes

These regulations can help in managing the class plus student compliance with the rules so that it is easier for me to manage the class.
